Aucuba, fatsia, skimmia and sarcococca all familiar ones that look well together. Grant, GARDEN DESIGN ILLUSTRATED (currently found in libraries and used book stores) has a bigger set of broadleaf evergreen shrubs for full shade listed. If wanting to depart from this group a bit try something ordinarily thought of liking a little more light (partial shade group, in Grant), like a camellia, rhododendron or firethorn to get brighter color.

I'll second a vote for Aucuba japonica especially the variegated cultivars which really can lighten up dark corners. Some are splattered with yellow, or have yellow centers or edges, and there's always plain green if variegation isn't something you like. I've had really great luck with them even in very deep shade.

AND...their evergreen stems are great to use in flower arrangements to hold up floppy flowers. If you change the water and floppy flowers once in awhile, the aucuba stays fresh in the vase and usually forms roots.

How about a deciduous shrub in there? Something like Disanthus cercidifolium, or the golden elderberry Sutherland Gold (it will be chartreuse green in shade).

How big is the space?
I highly recommend Sweet Box (Sarcococca) for its wonderful fragrance in late winter-early spring. Although the tiny, white flowers aren't very showy, the fragrance quite makes up for that. It's evergreen. S. hookeriana var. humilis stays pretty low, and doesn't get too wide (about 3-5 ft.), as long as the suckers are pruned. It's not very fast-growing, either. S. confusa and ruscifolia are bigger.

I'm not sure how deep your shade is, but in the darkest shade, the shrub I've seen hold the best green, was evergreen huckleberry.
