That is the potting soil I used this year with much success. Perhaps it was something about the bags you purchased. It is really the best with starting seeds!

I wonder if it got wet and anaerobic. The moisture control stuff holds moisture better (obviously, lol!) and if it got really wet and anaerobic it would smell. However, I would think that it wouldn't really affect growth that much. Does the mix in the pots still smell funny?

Im so glad to see that other people experience the same as me, I have purchase Miracle-Gro for years but now I have noticed the horrible smell when you open the sack. The smell is like manuer of the cow's. I can't take that smell anymore going start looking for some other brand, the other thing is that my plant's are drying and dieing especially my Hibiscus plant's.

I just bought two huge bags of Miracle-Gro garden soil and they had a very bad smell I thought it smelled like urine or maybe cow manure . I don't know what mg has done but I'm going to use it because I live far away from the store and I hope there's not a problem or I will be contacting Miracle-Gro

I just bought a bag and yes, it smells terrible. I was going to use for indoor plants, but definitely won't do that now!

I bought a 50 qt of Miracle Grow potting mix. When I first used it everything was fine, no smell. I folded the bag half way through and when I used it couple of days later, there was a strong smell. I don't even know how to describe it. I continued to use it for house plants. Discovered the drainage is really slow when I repotted my plants. Don't know what it will do to my plants since it was only yesterday. Any suggestions? I will definitely think twice about buying Miracle Grow in the future. BTW, I live in sunny California and summer time is really dry, so it shouldn't be mold.

I repoTed 2 house plants with Miracle Gro potting mix. The odor was something I never smelled before. I thought the smell might dissipate but I can’t tolerate it. I’m wasted $14 & will have to repot the plants!! In the meantime the house plants have to live outside

I just bought a bag at Walmart in Nebraska and this is the first time I’ve ever smelled this horrible odor! Hoping it doesn’t kill what I just repotted and hope it doesn’t make the house stink!!

I just opened 2 huge bags of MGPS last night,and yes the same thing happened to me!!!!

I already threw some soil under my trees, bushes and knockout roses., before I noticed that Horrible odor emerging from the bag! Like......if something died in the bag! I hope I did not do damaged to my garden! It will be pretty hard to remove that smelly soil!

I can’t believe this is Miracle Gro Soil!

Im not sure if I should use this soil to plant my Cannas. I spent a lot of money on the plants and don’t want to see my Flower plants go to waste!

I’m thinking maybe moisture seep into the bag and perhaps ithe soil needs to dry out For a few days before using the soil!

does anyone have any idea what to do?

Miracle Gro Soil is losing their credibility with me that’s for sure. I will be contacting the company.

Mine smelled like creosote! Will not buy again.

I planted my seedlings in Organic Miracle Grow.It was a nice day and I did it outside. When I brought everything inside (too cold to leave outside) I noticed a strong ammonia like odor that spread through out the house as the furnace picked up and spread it. It gets worse with water. Some seeds I planted direct never did sprout and all were from same package as the seedlings.

I have the same problem with the smell. I bought the organic potting mix and I couldn't stand the smell. Then I changed to the organic soil and the smell was worse. I had it out on my deck and now the whole house smells. I won't be buying it again. I'll use what I have to fill in holes in the yard but I wont trust it on my plants.

My miracle grow soil smells like kerosene, plants arent growing like they have in the past . Stunted growth and dying. I am going to contact company about this

We read the directions on the bags we bought labeled garden soil it smelled so bad and was hard to break up the directions said to mix 2-3 inches on top of regular soil and mix into the top 6 inches i can’t imagine using it straight out-of the bag

Answer from Miracle Grow - I checked with Miracle Grow, it does contain Cow Manure. I'm good with it, glad to know what the smell is all about. We used to use it in our large garden. It is a good fertilizer

Ive used four bags of Miracle Grow this spring and immediately noticed the smell. I’ve also noticed that the soil doesnt seem to retain any moisture, even a very light watering results in a thick brown sludge pouring out of the drainage holes. Even more worrying - nothing is thriving! A newly purchased potted dwarf apricot tree is dying and my hydrangea cuttings which were all very healthy last year and over wintered very successfully are now looking as though Im going to lose them! im going to talk to Morrisons which is where I bought them from.
