I use Deer Out on my roses and shrubs that they like and it works well. I think I've used it for 3 years now.

Thanks for the information about Deer Out. I did notice the mole mounds after the picture. That area of my lawn use to be a parking lot and there is only 2 inches of soil on top of hard packed gravel that takes a jack hammer to make a hole into it, that is the reason for the raised beds. I don't know how the moles do it, tunnel in that soil, but they go into my raised beds and move the good soil into that poor growing area. I don't like using poison or traps to kill some poor animal trying to make a living just for some cosmetic looks of a lawn, but I do rake the mound down. Didn't this time though.

I've got a lot of mole mounds. They're my worst pest by far. When I put out a new plant, I make a wire basket at least the size of a gallon pot and put the plant in that so they don't plow right through the root system. I've lost plants to that in the past and this helps them get established enough to take some abuse later. It's especially helpful in my vegie garden.

I'm going to guess that you're suggesting that because of the size the roots can get to be compared to the hole size. I use chicken wire and it rusts out in a year or 2. If the root system is good and strong in a gallon pot, then I don't use it on those plants, because I've found they can take some damage better. I have never needed it for trees, unless they're in a small pot. It's mostly used on vegies, perennials and annuals.

Put nothing in the ground around a tree or shrub that the roots may run afoul of later. Are you digging around them to find that the chicken wire is gone after only one or two years? That is unexpected.

No! When I plant vegies the following year or 2 I usually run across one I missed and what's left just falls apart. No plants are suffering from it. Moles have killed off many new plants, so anything that allows the plant to settle in enough to withstand some damage is better than nothing.
