Watsonia?

Ixia, common name African Corn Lily, I've never grown this myself, here's a little information I found in one of my books.
Relative of the Iris family from South Africa, marginally frost hardy, plant in fall in well drained soil, bonemeal mixed in soil before planting will help produce good blooms. Prefers a sunny position but needs protection from hot sun. Water through winter and spring but let it dry out after flowering. These plants are suitable for containers.In frost prone areas these plants should be grown in a cool greenhouse. Propagate from offsets in fall. If sown from seed in fall should bloom in their 3rd year. Zones 9-10

Are you sure it's Ixia? Blooming right now is Schizostylis coccinea, Scarlet River lily or crimson flag, and it has an appearance much like you describe. Unike the Ixia, it is quite hardy in the PNW and is a reliable late season bloomer, often producing flowers into December. Colors are variable, from white to pink to a true red, but a coral-rose pink is most common.

I consider this a must-have plant for PNW gardens - it's easy to locate and establish, requires minimal care (light irrigation during summer), forms a gradually increasing colony and provides perennial flower color long after most others have bitten the dust in cold weather. There is something immensely satsifying viewing brightly colored coral flowers through the greyness of a typical NW November :-)

I think Gardengal has nailed it. Schizostylis is quite hardy here whereas in my garden Watsonia will not come through the winter.

Watsonia is sold here. When working at local garden centers in the past I have had more than one visitor present me with a flowering watsonia spike that they found in their garden, ask me about it ("What kind of 'glad' is this"?). I had a clump here for many years, however it got full of mites (as crocosmias so often do) and didn't flower much, so I got rid of it.

However, Schizostylis is more common and does come in pink. Flower doesn't resemble Ixia as much, but maybe that's it anyway.
