I haven't a clue, Christie. I've seen a lot of large beetles, so it's hard to say. Does it have a hard shell or is it soft bodied? Reminded me of those large beetles you find in a woodpile, but it doesn't look hard shelled enough.

looks like what hubby calls water bugs--kinda like a huge roach?probably not tho. does anyone remember the big black beetles with big horns? as a kid we used to hold them to see the blue flame they'd emit--

I asked in the pest forum and someone identified it as a pine sawyer beetle (ergates spiculatus).
It's not real exciting except for its size. I tried to take his picture on a tape measure and he kept running off. He's fast! He was almost two inches long.
