Could be a dioone but you need to post a picture of the whole plant.

Are there Dioon that are prickly like that? I was thinking Encephalartos but a whole pic would definitely help ID it.

In the meantime, more pics. There's really only the one leaf. It's putting out another, and that growth is cute and fuzzy. This is super slow-growing cycad. Or else it doesn't like where it is.

I just got back from looking at pics of D.spinulosum. It is very similar. But....

If you note in my pics, the new leafing is soft and fuzzy. None of the pics of new leaf on spinulosum look like mine.

Did find the Cycad Pages (Sydney) and they suggest that both Dioon and Encephalartos have "pubescent" new leaf. Aargh.
