I saw those big suckers a few years ago. They smelled awesome. I have wanted one foe the scent ever since. The giant Gardenia inside the gates is pretty amazing also.
Anyways sorry about your tips. That really stinks. I'd probably have the same issues here so I may not even try one.

I would be careful with the DSP - I had two large in-ground ones that bloomed profusely, but a couple cold nights (high 20s - although they were under frost cloths and had some additional heat) in winter killed both of them.

From what I understand there are two different Singapores out there: the tree form which grows upright and quite large, and the shrub form (like I had) that grows low and blacktips if you look at it wrong :)

Not sure if they're variants of the same type or different enough to be separate varieties, but I finally gave up on mine after many years of frustration, too. Mine also defoliated every year, no matter how much I babied it through even 55 degree nights.

For much less trouble and a better scent--IMO--I can have the hardier and smaller growing Celadine or the Dwarf Deciduous White. Just my two cents.

I have both Singapore and DSP and I think DSP is more prone to winter conditions, at least here in SoCal. Actually had tip damage on DSP during one of the most mild winters we had in years and the year before that, I lost several DSP plants to cold temps while Singapore has only black tipped once back in 2011 or so.

I would say forgo the DSP and maybe try Mele Pa Bowman instead. While I adore DSP it does gets those unsightly leaf spots in winter while MPB doesn't.

I have seen ones growing like shrubs and of course the ones that grow like trees all over Hawaiiâ¦. but have never seen a vendor distinguish between the two.

I noticed tonight that an inflo was pushing out though a black tip. I will see how it does this year but if I could go back in time I would have started with something else (this was my first ever plumeria.)
