I know a man in Modesto who successfully grows bananas and has them fruit pretty consistently from year to year. Modesto isn't the warmest part of the valley by a long shot, but perhaps with the right variety, right timing and right fertilization, you may be able to get a flower earlier in summer to allow the fruit to mature through November when the summer winds down. I'm not familiar enough with bananas but I do think he grows Ice Cream and California Gold varieties. There was also a banana plant with a large bunch of ripe bananas near my workplace in SE Fresno. I remember it was November when I first noticed the ripening bunch of bananas in a private home garden.

Same here. They bloom anywhere from like April-Nov depending on there age etc. This year I was expecting them to bloom a lot earlier but only one did. It bloomed in April but never made it long before the winds came and took it out. They are supposed to be apple bananas so they wont get too big. They are already about the size of mini bananas in the store, maybe slightly smaller but not quite as thick. I'm just hoping they will get to their proper size before a frost so i can ripen them inside. Usually, I dont see frost in my yard until late Dec/ early Jan so that gives some time if the weather permits.

Wow, that's a nice bunch of bananas there, U.S. Marine.

The past Summer has been very hot, humid and wet season and my bananas all love it so much. This year 10 of them have fruited, some of them have reached harvest time, but there are some that are still developing. Just recently, there has been some days of low night temps of 40's-50's. My Raja Puri, Praying Hands and Apple Bananas all look ok, except two bananas which I bought online that were supposed to be of the Raja Puri variety, but apparently the vendor sold me something else. I'm kind of disappointed as I've grown them to maturity for 2-3 years now. In any case, their fruit did not stand the low temps and all wilted up. So, my conclusion is that some varieties are more hardy than the others. But, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll reach to a stage where they're close to maturity so I can harvest them and let them ripen indoor.
