First snowstorm?

Some of the weather models are now predicting a rather sizable snow event in the Mid-Atlantic (Northeast?). Love those postings of all those snow-covered Trachys. Get ready!

Looks like Virginia, DC, baltimore, all the way to coastal Nj is getting slammed with it. Eastern long islad should get about 2-4 inches at the least with many parts of the mid atlantic getting up to a foot! NYC may or may not get a bad snow from this. It can just be a little coating, or up to 10 inches. It looks like the forecast for Boston isnt certain either.

I think anyone from the western parts of the carolinas to southern NJ should definately watch out and stock up on food (coastal Nj might get all snow, but the delmarva penninsula and coastal areas south of that should get a rain). I think NYC and Philly as well as the northeast (coastal New england) can defiantely be affected by this too.
At least there wont be very very bitter cold in place like the storm in the midwest a few weeks ago so the palms can stay uncovered with a nice coating of snow on them!

Since its going to be a cold week it could very well be a white chirstmas for many people on the east coast!

Just stay tuned. Some early forecast models calling for possible blizzard conditions into the northeast now. To be continued I'm sure. Getting excited here--love the snow as long as it doesn't linger!

Same to be said of holiday visitors and relatives.

I'm going to get it, the forecast is calling for 8"-12" here, and also spots of 12"+. Its the second snowstorm for me this year, in early December got 7" total. Its suppose to snow for 5 days straight here, stop 1 day and start again. The highest temp the forecast is calling for in the next 10 days is 38, and the lowest 14. I got a bismarck palm outside now, and it has already survived the first snowstorm, and 11 degrees one night. I've got some trachy seedlings outside, protected from frost, they are only 1 year and almost 6 months old in pots.

    lee466...
Im surprised you birsmarkia survived 11F. Are you protecting it? I thought that they coudnt go below 20.

Its bitter cold here. Low temperature was forecasted to be 21 degrees at 8:00 pm, I check the forecast now and it says 16!!! Thats very bitter cold. Its 22 right now and I just ran outside to protect all my palms. I didnt have the chance to bring in my potted mexican fan palm or my potted pindo and they arent recieving any protection. We shall see how things go! Every day looks below average and snow still remains a possiblity for saturday, but we will probably be missing the worst of it.

Were under the gun here in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan area. The winter storm watches were up yesterday, they have been changed to winter storm warnings this morning. The forecast is calling for snow starting tonight, late, and 1-3" by daybreak Saturday, then accumulating an additional 8-12" Saturday with winds gusting 25-35 MPH. The storm should move out and the snow taper off to snow showers early Sunday morning. Total storm accumulation totals in the DC area should be 10-15+ inches of snow by the time its all said and done. This could be the biggest snow for many in the mid Atlantic in YEARS. This could ALSO mean that we wont have a dream of a white Christmas here, were probably going to actually get it, especially with the temps not predicted to go above 35-37F during the day, and Sunday/Monday temps should stay well below freezing during the daytime hours as well, with lows in the mid teens to low 20s.

Ive wrapped both my outdoor potted Trachys in minilights, and wrapped that in plastic, and man is it ever TOASTY WARM in there. Just based on a feel with my hand its roughly somewhere in the 70's-80s+ inside the plastic. I have left the crowns uncovered, and there is a hole in the top of the plastic wrap, but with the warm air coming out thru the holes I highly doubt the crowns will freeze at all.

Everyones dreaming of a white Christmas, amen.

Curretly it 19* (unusually cold for 11 am) and sunny.

Palm lovers north or west of Virgina and Delaware. Why put your trackys or other palms to the test - avoid leaf-burn & cover them for possible heavy snow and biting cold winds to follow.

NYC forecast is for possible 5-10" of snow looks pretty likely now with high winds. Long Island is under a blizzard watch.

Tropicalzone7 I do protect my Bismarkia during cold nights. I usually uncover it when the temps get above 30, to give it some sunshine, so it doesn't get sun deprived.

They upgraded the winter advisory, to a winter storm warning here. Its now calling for 12"-20" here.

We are under a winter storm watch with 5-10 inches possible here in NYC, but it could be more, or barely anything at all. The way the storm is exiting the coast is making this storm very hard to predict. Still very interesting. my camellia looked dead this moring for some reason after a 16F temperature, but it recovered once the sun came out.

Its about 33f outside now, but my pindo palm is 56, and went to 48 when it was 16F this morning. I dont know why it is getting so warm in there, but as long as it doesnt get above 75F I dont think it will be a problem.

Heres what 16 F did to my unportected plants...
    Spindle palm- a gonner :(
Mexican fan palm- Leaves very dark green in appearance, but the spear still looks fine.
Potted pindo palm- absolutely no damage at all
Spanish bayonett yucca- a little damage, but still alive.

If we get some good snow Ill be sharing some "winter pics'

And if yiu look at your calendars winter offically starts on Monday so i guess you mine as well end the fall with a big snowstorm.

Looks like even coastal virginia (incliding VB) will be seeing some wet flakes mixing in with this one.
DC will be right near the worst of it with maybe a foot and a half of snow!

It's starting to rain here in VB...Hopefully turning to snow tomorrow!!! Good Luck to everyone in No. Va...and northward...NY..should see a good amount!!!

    Get ready.........

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas ( hopefully white!!!)

"Palm lovers north or west of Virgina and Delaware. Why put your trackys or other palms to the test - avoid leaf-burn & cover them for possible heavy snow and biting cold winds to follow."

Local forecasts are only calling for minimums in the mid 20's in the snowstorm (blizzard?)and rising to 50 F. by X-Mas day, with showers.--I expect little if any burning from this meteorological event (albeit impressive and fun for some of us). The real damage is from arctic air (single digits and lower), wind, and winter sun combined with frozen ground. These juicy storms come up from the tropics (Miami had one FOOT of rain yesterday, and this is the dry season--blame EL NINO!:)

Looks pretty bad, just starting to get some now. Hope everyone did what they had to do for the weekend because it looks to me like its not going to be traveling weather.

I love the tropics, but this storm looks exciting to me, we havent gotten over a foot of snow in a very long time (maybe 06, possibly even 03) and looks liek 8-14 inches in our forecast (im anazed atht eh snow totals toward our south, DC broke a december record of 12 inches and exceeded it!

Good luck and stay safe everyone!!!

So far no snow here. Hear the storm's been strengthening and deepening all morning. I saw some pretty amazing contrasts in air temps this morning between New England and Hatteras. Combine that with all the subtropical moisture from the Gulf Stream and it looks like it could be a whopper. Wonder if it's also slowing down in forward movement though. Still, people are driving around like crazy, almost got hit by a rig this morning that did not stop for a red light at a busy intersection. Cold but not bitter and so far no wind but not far from currently posted blizzard warning areas of Long Island. Seems we tend to get a lot of the wrap around snows (supposedly after the storm has passed). Truth be told, I love a good snowstorm too!

Well, "Officially" at National Airport here in DC they measured 16.4". I dunno why they use that stupid airport as the "official" for the area, because just about everywhere else got 20+ inches. We live about 1 mile south of the airport on the Potomac, and I measured 26" on the grass in 3 different places. They must take the measurements on some sort of "ground" thats heated and doesnt start accumulating until theres already been 3-5" of snow fallen everywhere else.

Trachy's should be fine! Pots never even came close to freezing, though the leaves did get bent down and almost totally covered, but they bounced right back up when I cleaned them off last night. Ill try and get some pics of soon.
