You do not indicate your zone, but I would not dig it up until it goes dormant in most zones. In a long summer zone like mine, I might transplant it into a pot when about two inches of NEW growth are on the cutting. Right now the cutting is living on the energy in the wood itself and does not mean there is any root feeding it. Al

the zone is around 4 or so and the cutting is in a substrate that i'm assuming doesn't get a lot of gas exchange(wet mud)is this something i should be worried about or am i overreacting? i have a humidity trap that i could move it to but i'm not sure if it even has the beginnings of roots yet. like u said,..it's surviving on energy within it's own tissues. can't help wondering though whether or not there are already some little nubblins going on in that mud...

Did you use any rooting hormone on it?

I've not had good luck with most tree cuttings, even with hormones under a glass dome, though I looked it up and it is possible with ginkos. It appears to be a slow process, as I would suspect, it may take more than a season to root. It may not survive the winter in this zone without protection.

It might root faster under intermittent mist or in a cloner.

I'm currently experimenting with rooting in pure perlite, watered several times a day kept in the shade. As one would expect, sedums rooted within several days in perlite. I started some hard wood cuttings in perlite tonight.

Try as many different ways as you can to root it, something will work eventually.

Some things I read say a early spring air-layering might root.

All that said...

I just bought 3 2-year old Ginkos on ebay for something like $8 last week. Unless your trying to propagate a tree because you need lots and lots of them or the tree has some special emotional value to you, your likely much better off just buying most trees.

You can order seeds for most trees for next to nothing on ebay, if you have the patience to properly follow the directions and properly grow the seeds.
