It really depends on your lifestyle and how important the counter is to you. If you're looking for something cost effective, then you may find that stone is just a bit to much to spend.
If you're looking for something low maintenance - you might find that products like marble, granite or concrete which require regular sealing to prevent staining is too much for you.
Engineered stone is gaining lots of recognition because they are virtually maintenance free and come with a lifetime warranties, which vary depending on the manufacturer. Some feel though, that they lack the 'natural, organic' look that granite and marble have because they have been engineered.
Cost wise, Plastic Laminate is definitely at the bottom end. Mid range would be Corian, and some lower quality granite (be wary of those), and higher end would be Engineered Stone, Marble and Granite.
