Kitchen island vs kitchen peninsula

Kitchen dimension is 215 inches x 123 inches, has a peninsula that divides kitchen form nook. Would like to have island instead of peninsula but kitchen designers I have talked to say our kitchen is narrow for island. nook has eight feet opening to family room. Kitchen area has a pocket door to formal dinning room, we are planning to open the kitchen to dinning room by removing the door and the upper half of the wall . Stove will remain in the same area, will have a short back splash and eating or serving counter. A clear hood will be above the stove.
My question is can I fit an island ? How . Would like to keep our round table and chairs. I have a bay window that I am willing to put a bench there so we can have more room for island. Would Appreciate your help

I think there is a HUGE misconception that islands have to be very large and imposing. I design in an area where there are a lot of small narrow historic homes and I have done several 15" and 18" deep islands. The trick is whether or not you want seating at the island (another misconception...there does not have to be seating). You can do some beautiful and creative things with smaller islands. From the looks of the pictures you will have to run it longs wayin between the fridge and sink but I think you could certainly do some sort of island.

It's hard to tell by the photos, but I'm thinking unless you remove the wall to dining room and rearrange the kitchen an island is not feasible with the space.

You could potentially have an island if the cabinets are configured in a L-shaped. One option would be to remove the buffet unit in the eating area and extend the cabinet to the bay window to gain back some cabinet spaces. A banquette is a good solution by the bay window to maximize floor space.

ApplianceLand is right. Islands don't have to be huge, or even very wide. I've seen "floating" islands made with Craftsman tool chests! And a floating island is not a bad idea in a small space, you can just roll it out of your way when you don't need it. And they have lots of drawers!

Thanks everyone. How about moving refrigerator to sink side and extend the cabinets all the way to bay window as Dytecture recommended and have narrow 15 inch or 12 inch cabinets to opposite side. I would like to have large enough counter so I could serve buffet style when kids are home for weekends.
In this plan refrigerator will be facing the family room, is this ok.
Dytecture what kind of cabinets should I use at nook area? Hutch style or floor to ceiling. How can I taper 25 inches counter to the end of nook area by bay window that is 12 inches deep?
On the opposite side with narrow cabinets should I give them counter top or floor to ceiling.thank

I agree a small island works just fine, but it looks here the workspace triangle would be compromised. You may have to rearrange the appliances...or walk around the island.

Hi paddockct, at 123 inches wide, I'm afraid there isn't room for the 12-15 inch deep storage on the other side as you are thinking of. Let's do the math here:

123"
- 24" (counter for sink)
- 72" (clearance around the island on both sides)
-----------------------------------------------
= 27" width for the island, which is the bare minimum given you wanted to have buffet style for kids.

Fridge facing family room is fine, and I would use the same style cabinetry and full height for the breakfast area.

For breakfast area should I do upper part glass?
In order to keep the triangle might be able to keep refrigerator
Opposite of sink and start island further down.
Garden window vs regular window, we have to change the window any way.
