First ripe tomato

Well, by golly, gee willikers, I have {{gwi:1207784}}! It has a few hail scars, but it looks beautiful to me! :) I have fruit on 15 of my 35 different plants so I'm very happy considering how bad everything looked after the hail in late May. Everything has blossoms, so this will make up for a miserable season last year.

And I thought I was doing good having tomatoes set this early:

Most of mine have fruit set, but I think the cherry tomatoes will be the first to ripen.

IÂm gonna pretend you didnÂt post that picture, Jali! Now IÂm salivating all over my keyboard! It doesnÂt look too good, but I bet it will taste wonderful! Mine are just barely starting to set fruit. But IÂm dreaming!

So that's an electric blanket there on the right to keep the chill off during the cold nights. And on the other side, is that an air conditioner for when temperatures get a little too high?

A ripe tomato for the 4th of July?!?

    Unheard of, absurd.

Unthinkable. Where do you think you are?
    In Paris?

This isn't the way it's done, not here, not now.
. . . and where does it stop? Where does it stop?

If I were a rich man, I'd have a electric blanket and an air conditioner for every tomato plant . . .

Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum. Ha!

Hey, cnetter and skybird, I am so shocked and delighted. This is the earliest non-cherry tomato EVER for me! And that Bloody Butcher has a lot more on it.

Steve, you are such a treasure to this community, I read your post and just ROFL! psssssttttt, it HAS to be a fluke! ;)

I imagine there are a few scribbling bloody butcher on their early lists for next year. hehehehe

    I'm thinking I'll try one.

Jali congratulations. I've picked one a Imur Prior Beta. Would of had some Kimberley's but with the hail decided to remove them and help the plant. So just now setting again. The hail really set me back or would of had a half dozen or so by now I think. My plants are really starting to kick in gear again. Will post some pictures soon. Jay

Hi, Jay! Nice to see you here! I was so sorry to hear you got the hail. That just stinks. But I'm glad to hear you had a few set even with that happen. :)

We have a few rabid tomato fans here so hope you'll be around a bit. :) So nice to see you here! Hope that stress just spurs them on to bigger and better things this summer.

    Jali,
A real nice forum here. Enjoy reading the posts and it is a lot more like where I garden. So much of the advice will work well for me. Some forget on the other forums some of us have completely different weather and soil conditions. I'm here to learn and share opinions.
I planted over 50 varieties of tomatoes this year with a total of 86 plants. And 40 peppers. Trying some peppers from a man at Fowler, CO he has grown for that area. They seem to be doing a little better than some others. Supposedly more heat and drought tolerant. I've had some interesting results on my tomatoes so far. The Aussie heirloom MR. Bruno is still doing very well. Have several others. Had sent some to my Mom and was over checking them the 4th and she has one plant Anana's Noire that is really setting fruit. Will know more about size and taste as the season progresses. But quite a bit of fruit set so far in my garden. Have been losing a few and trying to figure out what is causing part of it. Will be watching your progress. Jay

Jay, I'll be anxious to hear how that Mr. Bruno does for you. I recall when that seed was offered on the tomato board. Looked like a big beauty. BTW, I think I can get some of those CP PL seeds if you have any trouble contacting the others. :) Anxious to hear how the Anana's Noire does for you too. The only variety that I lost and didn't have a replacement for after the hail was Ugly, but I can try that next year. Sungold was nearly defoliated, but you wouldn't know that today. :) Spears Tennessee Green, which I got from Alan has a mater forming. I was kinda worried with it being an 80 DTM mater, but I got all the later season ones I dared to try in the pots early in May and so far so good.

I thought perhaps you would like our happy little crew. A few months ago Digit started a thread about what RMG was. Not specifically a geographical area, but more the climate and our approach to the challenges was what we thrashed about. :) We have a unique type of growing climate and season that kinda leaves us out of so many discussions elsewhere. And you definitely fit the profile where you are. :)

And be sure to chime in on the Who's Here in 2007 thread that Skybird started. We need to count you and anyone else who has just joined us amongst our members. :)

Yikes! Another tomato nut! 50 varieties and 86 plants! Yikes! Another tomato nut!!!!!

Do you sell at a farmerÂs market, Jay? What on earth do you do with that many tomatoes?

    IÂve got 7 plants! :-)

Jali, heÂs already checked in on the WhoÂs Here threadÂalmost a month ago. Where you been, girl! Have you checked out the Fall Swap thread? Ya know thereÂs somebody coming from east of youÂjust over the border in Kansas? Any chance youÂd consider carpooling and coming too so we can all meet you? Just thot IÂd ask!

    Happy tomatoes,
    Skybird

:::blush::: I'm a blonde hick. What can I say? ;) LOL

I'm thinking seriously about the swap, Skybird, but I'm not sure of my schedule yet.

    Hi Blondie,

If youÂre able to come and decide to ride with KSplanter, IÂm sure youÂd like her. IÂve emailed with her a couple times. Hope it works out! ItÂs fun to meet the regulars.

ThereÂs a SLIM chance Highalt, from the western slope, will come.

Fingers crossed for both of you,
    Skybird

    Sigh. A lovely fruit indeed.

My tomatoes don't even have flowers yet. But hey, they're alive. For me, that's a success.

I'm showing off my first ripe tomato! It is one of the Tommy Toes. The Mortgage Lifter still only has the two it came with and no flowers, although we noticed three tiny flower buds, so who knows.

    look, look

Oh, lilacs, I hope yours make it!!

    No fair!!

I have tomatoes that have set but they are still green. I"ve battled the flea beetles but they seem to be gone now and there's lots of new grow growth and some flowers.

    Enjoy! My mouth is watering...

Ooh ooh, I'm gonna take a picture of the single red sweet 100 that's ripe before the kids pick it!

For the most part, my tomatoes stopped settin fruit when the heat got bad, so I have some biggish green tomatoes, one ripe cherry and nothing in between.

Stop with the ripe tomatoes, guys! I can't stand it! You wouldn't want to throw a little old lady into the depths of despair, would you!

Maybe you should cut your lone Sweet 100 into pieces so everybody can have "some," Cnetter.

IÂve got green ones on all of them, but low down, and I think theyÂve stopped setting fruit since the HOT weather has started too. Hope IÂm wrong. ThatÂs what happened to me last year, and I wound up getting very few ripe tomatoes in the end by the time it cooled again. IÂll have to get out my pin from the olden days that I used to wear in summer when I still had two good legs (and money) and skied that says, Think Snow! Hmmmm! Guess that wouldnÂt be too good for the tomatoes either!

I think my Sungold is still setting fruit, but none starting to ripen yet. At least theyÂll go fast when they do start to ripenÂand there will be lots of them. And my Super Sweet 100 is by far the worst one I have this year so farÂonly a couple tiny green tomatoes near the bottom, and not even very many flowers. That oneÂs out for next year.

For those of you with ripe ones,
    Enjoy,
    Skybird
