need more info on both..once blooming or repeaters? fragrance? pics of the leaves and stems with thorns would help, also..size of bush?? from the pics you posted, they both look like the same rose, too hard to tell..donna

Thank you, The first rose is mildly fragrant, thornless, velvety and almost black-red before before it's fully open.
This bush is two years old and about four ft, high. Acts more like a long stemmed rose:

The climber is four yrs old, no particular fragrance, very thorny, and blooms just once, as far as I can recall. I wasn't able to dead head it these past years...I don't know if doing so would encourage new blooms. With the canes bent it reaches above the first story window.

Does the climber ever bloom later in the summer? If it does, given where you live and that it's scentless I'm going to guess it's Blaze. Are the flowers about 2" - 3" wide? Blaze is probably the most common climbing rose in the Mid-Atlantic. It's flowers are a clear bright red and have no scent.
