Repot it for now, perhaps in a larger pot. Perhaps put a baseless 2 litre pop bottle over it without the cap. That should keep the squirrels from ferreting around too much in the soil, and then, maybe plant it, pot and all, till next spring.

Steve, thank you so very much for your advice. It makes perfect sense to me. That darn squirrel keeps digging it up, so I think this pop bottle idea will discourage that activity.
