Love this! I have done this without the tufts. Have plywood cut to size/shape you desire. Rectangle is simplest. In a nutshell, all you do is glue batting to front, wrap your chosen fabric around as is you were wrapping a present and staple in back. You will be able to find dimensions for wood, fabric quantities online depending on your bed size.

May I ask - how does it get attached to the bed? Or is it attached to the wall?

It is attached at the base of the frame. If you look at the frame you will see several holes for a headboard attachment.
You can attach it to the wall but only if you never intend to move it :)!
