Thanks, Art. Problem is (aside from being techie (smile)) there are other subshrub Salvias not in this group.

Best I can come up with so far is "greggii/microphylla", which is not inclusive.

I's call them subshrubs as well, with additional modifiers like north and central Mexican mountainous subshrubs, but that doesn't exclude S. regla, S. melissodora, and others found there. They are all members of section Flocculosae, though microphylla isn't (yet) formally in that section.

The relationship between greggii and microphylla needs a lot of work, and some of the current thinking is that greggii is a form of microphylla.

BTW, all of the Flocculosae sages (except greggii) should have true blue flowers. Currently available forms of S. muelleri and coahuilensis may be hybrids, and forms described as lycioides x greggii are best guesses of the blue parent. I have heard theat the botanists from the University of Nuevo Laredo in Monterrey know where the true blue forms are.

Someone needs to do a lot of DNA work to help untangle this mess.

I'm not sure if there is a third parent species that is responsible for the yellow-flowered forms and the yellow through orange colored forms, which prompted the investigation to describe S. x jamensis. This shortcut applies to all greggii x microphylla hybrids, but I am reticent to apply it.
