Hi, hummersteve, have you tried other salvias? My hummers hit s. blepharophylla before anything else, and I have many salvias! It must have a good nectar content. Also, salvia microphylla Pink is a good hummer attractant, cute and easy to grow. I have never seen them on any of my several coccineas... go figure.

Hi Steve, I have about 20 plants I bought at a closeout at a corner lot for $2 each. When asked about the variety the seller asked his wife if she knew which row was pink or red (in December). I call this the landing strip for my hummers. I sill am getting 50 in number, 6 different species. david

I have coccinia , subrotunda and guaranitica black and blue every year which are used much by hummers. On the greggii I have had furmans red and magenta, but I was greatly disappointed in the blooming of those even though they are very pretty. At the nursery I got this one at I could have should have gotten many more as they had these tucked away in the back because they werent selling. They were also in bad shape all laying out flat. So I did have to stake them up .

The one in your pictures looks like Cherry Chief, with its broad leaves. Are the margins dentate?

Yeah, my salvia g. "red" has a much darker flower color than these pictures. I'm starting to wonder about some of the names nurseries put on things... My salvia San Antonio (that's all it said) is apparently actually SIERRA San Antonio. I bought an Agastache (very colorful) whose cultivar name did not come up on ANY Google search... LOL. Ah well, the Anna's hummingbirds are happy.

In looking closely at the leaves I cannot say they are dentate , more closely resemble entire. Similar to my coral honeysuckle. Whatever it is , the blooming is exceptional as I have stuck the mother plant in virgin ground is even more so. I must add that I did amend the soil a little.

Salvia greggii `Sierra San Antonio' is the name Yucca-Do distributed the yellow/orange bicolor sage they collected. I kept that name when I distributed it as well. It is probably of hybrid origin, and the mix with microphylla has been described as x jamensis.

This plant that I have pictured was also labeled as autumn sage.
