My experience on broccoli is tha each plant produced a 6 inch head and I didn't allow it to grow any subsequent side shoots. I'd say the cauliflower did about the same. For carrots it depends on the variety, but my Mokums grew to about 6 inches last year. You'd have to ask the raccoons how big they got this fall.

Each plant was planted according to Mel's spacings.

Oh, and broccoli and cauliflower will shade most plants, including their own, so careful how you plant them.

My broccoli just came up from seed and I'm planting out 5, as I did last year, not together. I got ~8 in heads from them, and maybe 6 side shoots that were 2-in heads and some tiny ones on top of that, but the heat came on all of a sudden and thrashed the cool seasons in a hurry.

My carrots were the size on the package, and my 'Purple Haze' were bigger, I plant them all over the place and don't do 12-16 per sq., but rather tuck them in all over the place where others like them and such, seem to really like near tomatoes as long as I keep the toms lower leaves up. Still eating some 'Purple Haze' and some going in chili next week.

My experience is some things are smaller - tomatillos, peppers, herbs. I favor toms so there's no reduction there.
