You can have more than one vertical trellis in a bed, so long as you have plans for the sun's direction and calculate the type of shade and how it will effect the plants.

My beds are oriented facing north-easterly which means that the sun's rays - which come in from the south as it tracks across the sky - will hit my beds rather uniformly however the plots in between the trellises are seeded with plants that are more shade tolerant.

It's an experiment of sorts but if the shadows cast by the trellis themselves are any indication, I should make out "ok" by the time everything has had a chance to flush out and grow in...

Supports are added at the end (North side) so that the tomato plants does not block sunlight to the other veggies. If planting only tomatoes in a bed, then i guess adding vertical supports in multiple places is ok. I does not know what the row distance requirements are for sqft gardening i will ask that question here also.

We know the 1 sqft foot works but many complaints about how crowded the get. So i will plant them one plant every 2 sqft. that being said thats 8 tomato plants per 4x8 bed or 6 plants per 4x6 bed.

I have done entire beds of tomatoes - it does get crowded no doubt. What I have done is 2 uprights(2x2) no higher than you can reach at the 1 ft mark. Connect the uprights with a cross beam (1x2). Then I run strings down to the tomatoes and wind the plants around the string as describe in the book.

I do the same at the 3ft mark and string everything up in the 2 closest rows.

Of course you would prob do better to just use the 2 south side rows for something a bit smaller even basil or flowers. Get creative.

I have had this method hold up to the strong wind & rain storms that frequent the North East during the harvest season, with tomato plants FULL of fruit. I was truly impresses how it held up better than when I used stakes & cages which always fell over.

You can do the same with cukes or other vining crops.
Use Jute twine if you are throwing the plants in the compost.
