Your columns are perfectly proportioned. Is there a ratio you used?

I'm not using an architect so I would be grateful for your direction. I am considering a stone base of 20 inches and a bottom pillar of 16 inches tapering to I don't know what. How do I ensure the height and width of column is in proportion to the overall height of entry roof? Deathly afraid of the "pencil look".
