visiting Great Dixter

My husband and I would like to visit Great Dixter this fall and are wondering whether the gardens will still be going strong in September and October. We would also like to see Beth Chatto's garden during the same visit and would appreciate any advice.

..Great Dixter should still be looking good in the autumn and I would expect Beth Chattos to be good too,as they are carefully planted for year round interest. You will need to check opening times though as many gardens close some time in October. Don't forget that Sissinghurst is very close to Dixter and will be well worth a visit - opening times have been extended into October this year - check out the National Trust website (www.nationaltrust.org.uk I think. My computer at home is down at the moment- but feel free to e-mail me fo details of many other gardens in my part of the world - I am just 3 miles from Sissinghurst. As soon as my hard disc is OK I will get back to you. Have fun planning your trip

Sissinghurst is also stunning and you must visit when you are in the area!

I have less experience of Beth Chattos garden in Autumn, but it is ofcourse a very highly regarded garden which is open throughout the year, so I am sure would be worth a visit. I have visited in the summer and the gravel
garden was stunning. Its website is www.bethchatto.co.uk

2 more great ones are Snows Hill (blew me away) and Rosemary Verey (sp?). When we were in England 4 years ago, we met both Christopher Lloyd (and his dogs) as well as Rosemary. We were there at the end of May. Everything was spectacular. I came home with 10 rolls or photos that would knock your socks off. What a tour. Must have seen all of the biggies and even more small, intimate gardens. There was one that touted the "crookedest chimney in Britain" and I believed them. Gorgeous!

Just a warning about Rosemary Verey's garden - it's closing to the public in September. She died about a year ago and the house (and garden) have been sold. Not sure when the official closing date is. I was there earlier this month and my tour group talked with her son. He didn't reveal who the buyer is, but we later learned that there is a "final open day" for RHS members sometime in September.
