I havent grown it..but it does from the sound of it seem touchy. It doesn't take frost-but one is growing in Santa Cruz..a cool summer climate. I'm not sure they like hot being highland Ficus. You might find part sun best for you.
One similar Ficus you could grow in Houston outdoors is Ficus auriculata. One good summer and it can come back from the roots every year if need be..rated to z8.

Thanks for your thoughts stanofh. Yeah, I originally wanted auriculata but the nursery didn't have any available at the time. I think the trick will be to find out what they are touchy about. The nurseryman said they don't like it below 50F.

One thing about F.auriculata Patrick is-mine was doing great here in the bay area,until a gopher took it out. And since I also have Ficus carica..the edible fig,and that was unbothered,the ornamental Ficus might be more of a problem.
You might want to make sure no gopher ever gets into your dammaropsis container. You never know!

That's an interesting thought about varmits eating figs. No gophers here. Way too wet. We've got turtles, crawfish, Palmetto bugs, coons, gators, possums, etc.
I'm thinkin about putting it on a "grow mat" to keep the roots warm in the winter.
