Mail Order Co. ?'s

Has anyone had good or back luck buying from the following on-line tropical sites?:

Desert-Tropicals.com

Laspilitas.com

(& if anyone knows what I mean by the Company I will abbreviate as TT (opposite of bottom Tropicals) since I just got the "don't use that name on the site due to spam alert" warning when trying to preview).

Already saw many are happy with Logee's, except for the price. Any other recommendations for sites with good/unusual Hummer plants to grow in containers would be appreciated.

Thanks Much!!

Joni

I have never mail ordered from TT, nor have I actually been to their nursery, but I have seen them "in person" with their plants at a number of plant shows in Central and So FL and have not been impressed. Plants seem pretty small, prices seem pretty big. Other people may have had different experiences.

I ordered some mango trees from TT, and was over all very pleased with them. Customer service is very good. There was one tree sent by mistake, but they told me to keep it, and sent me the correct one the next week. The trees varied in size. One was three foot, one five foot, others in between. Seven trees are thriving in the greenhouse, growing, even blooming. Four trees are slowly putting out signs of new growth, but are still mostly dormant. The leaves on most are covered with an orange deposit from the well water they use to water the plants, so don't make as good a first impression as other plants I've received.
I subscribed to their magazine as well, and found some helpful information in it.

Caldwell Nursery in TX has some very nice plants. I've bought several plants over the past few years and have never been disappointed.

What kind of plants are you looking to buy? I think it depends on what you are looking for because there are some great smaller specialty nurseries depending on what you want?
    In general:
Desert tropicals is not a nursery they are mostly an educational site for growing tropical plants in a desert enviornment. They sell plant Cd's etc but not plants as far as I know. They have links to nurseries I think.

I have ordered seeds and a tropical magazine from TT but they didn't seem all that great so I haven't ordered any plants -thier shipping is expensive for plants.

Zone 9 tropicals has good plants for the price but thier shipping has gone up too lol. Logees has small plants high shipping but the one plant that I have lost over the years was replaced and the others grew quickly. Kartuz greenhouse is another source.
I ordered some Ti plants from Aloha Tropicals one year and they were very slow and one plant was the wrong one and was never replaced. All the plants were healthy though.

Seedsprout is a great place for brugmansia,
Also, there is gingers r us or Gingerland Tropicals for gingers, Going Bananas for bananas.

I've ordered from Kartuz and Logees and have been happy with them. They are small starter size plants. Kartuz sometimes grows them to order so email and ask for an estimated shipping date if you want them immediately. Otherwise, it might take a couple of weeks but Jim keeps you informed.

I've bought big healthy and relatively unusual plants at plant fairs from TT. Prices were not cheap, but in the ballpark of what other vendors were charging.

Some other places to try: Gardinos at www.rareflora.com, and www.zone9tropicals.com and www.buried-treasures.com. I don't know what you're looking for, but I've been happy with all of these places.

TT is great. Not cheap, but the 20 or so plants I've ordered from them have arrived quickly, been in great condition and have been good size for the money.

I don't know what problem Garden Web has with TT. I've been posting here for almost seven years and have have never seen TT try to sneak in a mention of their company.

Anyway this forum is supposed to be about exchanging information about plants. What better kind of information is there than where to buy good plants?

Has anyone tried Natural Selections Exotics in Florida, or either Loresco or Montoso in Puerto Rico? I am planning on buying from these nurseries and any input would be appreciated.
Also, Brent and Becky's are fantastic, check their website at http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com

Natural Selections has a good reputation but as far as I'm concerned way too expensive. I haven't tried Loresco but Bryan from Montoso Gardens in PR is fantastic. Healthy rhizomes, out of I think the 9 I ordered, only lost one and that was probably my fault. Also try, Ray & Gwenn from Tropical Flower Farm in PR...also awesome and great people to order from.

I've had a good experience with Montoso and I've had a nice trade with Gwenn from Tropical Flower Farm.

I have had great trades with Ray and Gwen in the past as well.

I have ordered Aloha Tropicals and Logee's, and I have visited Logee's often. I've had good experience with both. I will never order from TT again- I think their plants were no good and neither was their customer service- They offer no refunds or warranties for their plants.

    Sorry I haven't acknowledged...Been sick for 2 weeks....

Sultry & Wanna Run....Looking for Hummer & Butterfly plants for containers. There are many attractive one's out there.

The rest...Thanks for all your input & links!! I'll be checking these out.

    I liked TT's web set-up & didn't have any computer/spam problems when I surfed. Hmmmmm..??

    Thanks again!!

Yodlei, one way to get the scoop on a nursery is by going to www.gardenwatchdog.com They list numerous nurseries, and people who buy plants/products leave feedback, be it positive, neutral or negative..you'd be surprised the number of nurseries around w/99% negative feedback that are still up and running..One nursery owes thousands of dollars and plants, never refunded or shipped plants, yet he's still in business..he's even changed the company name but Gardenwatchdog got wind of the names, and posted to people who are thinking of ordering from him.
I don't know TT nursery, but if you'd like more opinions, go to gardenwatchdog.com, find TT's page, and read what others have stated about them..
In the meantime, you might run across a nursery to buy plants you're interested in..Toni
    PS..hope you're better..

So many other nurseries have the same plants and same sizes that TT has and at a much much lower price.

Thanks Toni & Ohiojay....I have been linked to that site once before so I'll have to check it out some more. I need more plants like I need a hole in the head. Planted over $500 worth last year which did excellent & already wintersowed & started some flats inside, too. Seems the more I peruse, the more good info I find.....So much to check out, sooooo little time. Thanks again to all.
