I would find something else to hang there or remove the trim

The trim needs to be removed, if not, the mirror will always look too big for the space. The mirror is round so the square shape behind it wouldn't look good anyway.

I like that you have chosen a circular shaped mirror to juxtapose the squares of the mantle and trim. I also like the concept of the layered effect of your mirror overlapping the trim. However, in your case, it will only overlap by 1 inch at the top and bottom. I feel like it is not enough overlap to look intentional.

It has a similar feeling as the mirror you chose, but it is 31 inches in diameter, so you have 1.5 inches clearance at the top and bottom. Plus I think it is quite reasonable.

If you really want a mirror there check out small versions of the sunburst. Cut a round piece of brown paper out till you can eyeball how big it should be.

From what is visible in the picture, the room looks pretty simple. Adding a picture would warm up the space and be more size appropriate. Mirrors above mantels only look good if they are reflecting something of interest--ie a floral arrangement in front or a nice view from the opposite wall. Otherwise they look fairly sterile. Choose another space in the house that is in need of brightening and hang the mirror there. Check out www.uttermost.com for some nice looking wall decor for above your fireplace.

No over the fireplace but maybe at the table. It would look great in a bedroom.

Let the mirror go, you will drive yourself crazy trying to find a wall for it. If you don't like it for the purpose you bought it for then keep looking till you find exactly what will work over your fireplace. Leave the dining room walls for another project.

Forget about the mirror. Find something you like passionately, but take measurements with you so you buy it right the first time. Have fun!

Mirrors traditionally look good above a mantle to enlarge the space, but I think this particular mirror style may not be the best choice. Try it by the dining table or in a bedroom if you really love the mirror. I am seeing a lot of white and beige in the picture as well, so you may want to consider a large floral print that would add some color to the room, depending on what you have in the room. You don't have to settle on one large piece of art or mirror either. A small grouping of collectables with a print or floral arrangement works well too.

I think if you post pics of the other elements in your room, you could get better suggestions. Type of mirror would depend on what other furniture etc you have.

I would have kept the peice and had the wood cut proffessionally to fit the wall.

Would be very helpful if you leaned the mirror up onto the fireplace- here's what I'm thinking -
the edges of your mirror are delicate enough to overhang the inner millwork border.

If you, or your hubby could stand off the side and hold the mirror up into the centre as best your can
and shoot a photo - I'll see if I can add some other accessories with it to maximize your fireplace look.

I don't think its the wrong thing until I see it over the space - but again, i think it'll work...

See, I think the top and bottom beads will slightly overhang a bit - if you balance it off with other items left and right - it'll be OK...DO NOT remove the millwork or the trim!

The piece appears too big, while the actual mirror seems a bit small for the wall. I agree with others & suggest you use this item elsewhere and get something different, if you can, like the one from Horchow.

I'm not a designer but I see what your problem is - visually, there are a lot of rectangles and squares. I might try a picture or group of family photographs above the fire and some curtains at the window to soften the edge. It will be interesting to hear what other people think. Good luck!
