Hmmm...
No, they usually do not have that type of stem. The leaf form looks wrong too, its too round, and the new leaves coming out don;t look right for Rostrata.

It looks more like a banana to me too.

If it turns out to not be rostrata and you don;t live in TX, CA, AZ, LA or HI LMK and I can trade you some Rostrata

Ok, that's what I thought. Oh, well. And I do live In Ca. Thanks for the quick response.

Is the underside of the leaf a light maroon color. If it is, that would be an indication that it might be Rostrata. I do agree with Bihai that the initial growth doesn't resemble Rostrata.

Here's the underside-

Well, the underside looks like the color of Rostrata but the leaf shape doesn't but sometimer the first few leaves are of a different shape. After a few more leaves, take another picture. The leaves should be more elongated than paddle shaped.

That glaucus sheath makes me think that its not Rostrata. I haven't ever observed that on any of mine. The only heliconia I have ever seen it on was one of those weird ones I had that died...one of the "Moon" series (Full Moon, Rising Moon etc)...I couldn't spell the name then and can't now...amegdyliana or something close to that. There are not a whole lot of heliconias that have any sort of glaucus coloration. Most if they are not all green have reddish/maroon sheaths. The stalks should be all green, perhaps with some red markings (this varies widely). The other weird thing is the way the new leaves are coming out of the stalk. The way they are so tightly curled and pointing over and down says "banana" to me.

I guess you have to just wait and see.

I was going to say banana also.

Ok, i'll just wait it out for a few more leaves to see if it changes at all. I'll post back when they have more.
