Iguana proof plants

I'm making a list of plants Iguanas don't seem to eat. Anyone have suggestions? I have to design a garden that has an iguana problem here in Mazatlan.

I imagine Iguanas taste change by region, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was very suprised by the plants they are not eating...and just as suprised by the ones they did eat (bouganivillea)

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott, I keep meaning to go out to the yard and take a real look around so I can list more things. But for now, mexican sunflower (tithonia), alpinia, red button ginger, Crepe ginger, salvia, and crown of thorns. I know they devour my queen palm seeds, bananas (the fruit), things with white flowers! I'm really surprised about the bouganivillea! You would think the thorns would be a deterrent. What do you find them eating the most?

From seeing one iguana once in a blue moon, I now see them every place, almost as bad as squirrels now.

They don't touch my gingers, including the varigated kind or my garlic and rosemary. They don't seem to like liropes, mondos, heliconias, draceneas, passiflora, plumbago, lantana, junipers, pittosporum, or jade plants- here in Florida anyway. The bouganvilleas suprised me too, and crotons and umbrellas aren't safe either unless the leaves are high enough away from the ground. Some large leafed philodendrons are safe, but the small leafed ones have been eaten in my yard. I'll add more as I do my research tonight.

I've found that iguanas don't eat Monsteria, Helliconia, Porter weed or Mexican petunia. I have a Yellow Eldar tree that sheds it beautiful leaves daily. The iguanas are like a vacuum cleaner. The eat the spent flowers on the ground, and I don't even have to rake. Plus the grass grows nice and thick under that tree now.

Which plants dod you find that they do eat??? I just bought Torenia flowers, and I'm planting them in containers and adding a 2 foot base in case the iguanas are attracted. I hope you are writing a book or blog on your findings! I've often thought of doing that myself, but I cant stay indoors long enough to write! Lol!

I do find that keeping a cat has helped tremendously. I am not a cat person at all, but we have had a good working relationship. Once when a giant five footer would not shoo when I said shoo, he took a look beyond me and turned tail running all the way across the street into a neigboring parking lot and hid under a car. When I turned around to look, Hunter the cat was in prowl pose creeping up behind me!

I have some to add: Madagascar Vinca (Catharanthus) and Jatropha. They leave my basil alone, and my orchid collection seems to be mostly safe, unless there are fragrant flower spikes. I am in Fort Lauderdale, the Coral Ridge area.

They have all of my vegetible plants, included everything in my elevated (3') box except the basil, Destoyed almost all of my ornamentals. Ate ALL of my poinsetta and I am hoping that that one killed it, but kinda doubt it.
