When Tamarind Pruning

I was just reading a few online sources about Tamarind tree care and all mention the trees should be pruned to have 3-5 main branches that will then form the main limbs. I'm wondering if the tree is large enough for this type of pruning. Its about 5 feet tall, pretty wide, bushy and seems healthy.

I would like to prune most of the lower and smaller branch growth. Does the tree look ready for that now or should I let it get a bit bigger or maybe wait until the fall to do it? Will doing this type of prune help make it grow upward?

Thanks.

Tony
