Seeding Media

Reluctantly, this year I bought a Burpee's "Ultimate Growing System" at Lowes. However, I was rewarded by the fastest, most complete germination that I've ever had! My tomato seeds started coming up in 4 days! (BTW -- I did not use the watering mat to germinate the seeds.) My standard seeding media has always been "Jiffy Mix" or "Metro Mix."

The plugs of the Burpee system appear to be Coir - and very granular and uniform. Water goes through it like it would through very coarse sand, but the Coir does hold some water. At any rate, the seeds seem to love it.

Of course, I'm not thrilled about the recurring price of the "Super Growing Pellets" Has anyone had similar experience using alternative sources of Coir or other starting media? Any suppliers you might recommend? Has anyone tried Burpee's "Tomato Seed Starting Formula" (bagged) -- same material?

Thanks,
