NEED Mango Help

Greetings Everyone,

WOW! I thought I was the only one who was into mangoes and reading this forum, I feel right at home. Need some advice...

I want to buy a mango for my Mom. Me and her both love mangoes. We live in Miami, FL...

For some reasons, mango trees do not seem to grow right in her back yard. They always die something She feels like she is cursed or something. I did research online and figured that I will need a tree that is really resilient when it come to disease.

I figured Tommy Mangoes would be best? What do yo think?

I also like that Choc-anon , also known as the Miracle Mango because of the fact it produces fruits late in the year and also twice a year. Anyone have this Mango? How does it fair in South Florida? Does it really produces fruits around that time?

Can someone recommend a good nursery I can buy these Mano trees? I prefer trees that are larger and have produced fruits before on a pot. I would then plant it. Anyone have any for sale? Please help.

The only Mango tree she has is a non- grafted tree. It is really tall like at least 15 feet but it never bears fruits! Worst of all, we do not know what kind of mango it is. It has been there over 6 years and is tall. It grew super tall because it is near the wash house in the back. All the waste waste from the washer machine keep the area moist. As a result, it grew fast and tall but no mango! Would the vigor fruit citrus food help it? Any recommendation of a product to speed up the process? It is a healthy tree with no signs of disease or anything. I will take a picture and post. I also have a vein from a yam growing on the tree, is that a bad thing?

Please help.

Check out Pine islands site. They have a great selection of mango's and they rate each types disease resistance. I am sure a tommy atkins would grow fine for you but IMO they taste crap. There are MANY better options out there. Good luck. You can't really go wrong getting one from pine island.

Do you recommend any others that taste better but yet disease proof?

If I could only get one I would probably go with a Nam doc mai or a mallika. I have not tasted either of these yet but I just bought both. They both scored highest at farchilds recent mango tasting. I have one nam doc may fruit that is a couple weeks away from being ready. Both are supposed to have good disease tolerance. Did you check out Pine islands site?

    Ok,

I read a lot about these on the forum. I guess I can find one blooming or with small mangoes on it? I really need to buy one for my mom. I will Google search the site now, please feel free to give me the URL.

How about my tree that doesn't bear fruit for over six years and it is tall. Do you recommend I feed with with something? superphosphate? Any chemical exist that makes\force it bear fruit the fastest?

I have a chocanon, but its new. Richard Campbell spoke to our fruit club and says it is good at multiple crops, especially in S. FL like where you're at. Its also asian, which is much more disease resistant than Indian type mangos. None are disease proof. There's an interesting other one called Thai Everbearing which does multiple crops. Nam doc mai as mentioned is asian too. Glenn, while not asian, appeals to almost everyone but doesn't seem prone to disease. There are tons of choices, I agree with previous post about not getting Tommy Adkins compared to other superior mangos. The vine could be a negative if it shades the mango too much.

ok thanks. I will definitely get it. I like the idea of multiple crop. What can I use to feed tall old tree so it can finally bloom flowers and make mangos?

How many times do they really bare fruits a year?

    Please help.

I will remove vines if it gets too bad

    Ok,
I just came from Pine Island and purchased the following:

    1 x 15 Gallon - Chokanan(Choc-anan) --Blooming with little mangoes

    1 x 3 Gallon - Mallika

1 x 3 Gallon Madame Francis--has evidence of previous bloom

I am really excited about the (Choc-anan) mango tree. Anyone have pictures of a young tree in their yards? Do they really produce fruits twice during the year?

I was really look for disease resiliency most of all since it is a gift for my mom and Mangoes have hard time growing there. Hope fully, all will be okay. I spent extra on the larger one with fruit since there is evidence it is a good tree ready to start producing.

    What do you think?

anyone have any Madame Francis tree?

Don't have any that you purchased...but I'm sure they should do fine in Miami. If I remember correctly your soil is not as sandy as the rest of the state, has a lot of limestone. I would make sure I fertilize with a good slow release fertilizer, like Osmocote or Dynamite Fertilizer(both available at the Home Depot and W.mart). Mango definitely needs full sun at least 6 hours a day.

Your seedling mango not bearing fruit for 6 years is normal because its not grafted. It might take 7-10 years to fruit. They are all different. I would definitely fertilize it, can't hurt...

I have Glenns, Cogshall, Keitt. I agree with dghays, none are disease proof. Main thing is to keep an eye on it and treat it( or prevent it), a lot easier to maintain before it gets infected. Sometimes easier said than done.

Good luck and hope they do better than the other ones you had.

Great pics of the ones you posted.

    BTW,

How do you get rid of those bugs that eat the leaves?

How does my miracle tree look?

    Good buy? Healthy?

Very nice pictures of your new Mango trees. About the bugs, you will need to find out exactly what bug you have before you can treat it. That way you can use something that will take care of the bugs and not hurt or damage the tree. You can always catch one, put it in a jar and take to it to a nursery so they can identify it and recommend a treatment.

Trees look very healthy!! Pine Island has very nice trees.

I've never heard of Miracle Mango, wonder how they taste, I'm sure its good. I will have to research and see if I can see a picture of what the Mango looks like.

It's the same mango as the chocanon. Miracle is just another name. Again thanks for all your help I will try to find one

hello, pineisland is out of chocanon mangos and they do not carry thai everbearing.

does anyone know where i can source both of these varieties, i would love to have out of season mangos.

    thank you

Only place I can think of to try is Jene's tropicals.

I just got off the phone with them(PI), and yes they have it avail. With them, just buy the 3 galllons cuz there trees grow pretty fast. I made a mistake and bought a large one last time, let it bare fruit... and now all the 3 gallons which cost much less are bigger then it.

Good photos by dr scifi. I noticed however that some have red mulch around them. As an FYI, I decided not to use the red mulch after reading several articles lately noting that there may be arsenic in some red mulch due to the inclusion of pressure treated board. The articles said to avoid using around fruits and vegetables. I also saw that some stores are only selling certified mulch etc. Just thought I would let you know as I was unaware of this until recently. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Thanks for the links Sampgarden. I've actually heard that red mulch wasn't good to use on Fruit trees, so I have been using Pine Bark Nuggets. No idea till now that red mulch contained arsenic...good information!

    Appreciate the Great Info!

Thanks for letting me know. I usually buy it on a regular to take good care of my trees. I will no longer but that. I must admit, it looks really good though.
