Florida trip suggestions

I'm thinking of taking an extra long weekend trip down to Florida soon and wondered if any of you had any suggestions? We'll probably stay somewhere close to Miami since that seems to be the hub of most fruit locations. Suggestions do not have to include only fruit inspired ones!

I'll definitely hit Fairchild again but will probably skip the Fruit and Spice park...just not impressed on my last visit. Thanks for any input. J

fruit and spice park sell some really interesting plants at times
also Flamingo Gardens - smaller a bit then Fairchild.
but a bit nicer as far as an old estate goes
they also sell some of their plants and have an area where they sell from
I bought a Ylang Ylang tree that was about 5 feet high when I bought it, it was $35, my former landlord had just bought one the same size from a nursery for $175
Mickey's Orchids in Ft Lauderdale, Excalibur exotix in Palm beach county has al kinds of rare and exotic fruits and trees.
Spykes Grove nursery on Griffin Rd in Davie, just bought a cinnamon tree and a Guava from them.
Morikami Park and the American Orchid society in Delray Beach.....
Down here the possibilities are endless

In Miami and vicinity I would suggest the following points of interest:

*Parrot Jungle (not cheap; but worth the various shows and sights, and birds)--Miami

    *Metrozoo--Miami

*Vizcaya (Villa with tours of the estate; beautiful gardens)--Miami

*There are many, many, many tropical fruit nurseries (many retail) in the are known as Redlands (Homestead; south and west of Miami)--I bought a tropical guava from a local dealer in the area of Spice Park.

*RF Orchids in Homestead; many other orchid specialists

    *Coconut Grove (shopping)

*Key Biscayne (nice for sight seeing drive; Miami)

Have a great time; don't forget repellent (mosquitos can be an issue in some areas this time of year)

What time of year did you visit Fruit and Spice Park? I go there all the time and I'm never disappointed... In any case, I would strongly second the suggestion to go to Excalibur - it's more than an hour from Miami, but they have an incredible assortment of trees, and very often have fresh fruit available to sample. The Miami nurseries that I like are Pine Island and Lara Farms, although if you're not planning on buying plants I can't imagine they would be much fun to visit. You should definitely visit Everglades National Park, and near the entrance you'll find Robert is Here, a fantastic fruit stand that frequently carries exotic fruit (monstera deliciosa, star apple, jackfruit, etc.). You might also want to visit Miami Tropical Bonsai, which has something like 3 acres of just bonsai trees.

Thanks guys. Definitely needed the "non-fruit" type suggestions.
