I have recently bought my great uncles house and the soil that surrounds the house is very rich and ideal for plants. There is a high amount of worms in my soil so much that the birds knew it as well. I need to know what is the best way to keep on top of the roots with out ruining my plants i have in the ground.

Keep on top of the weeds around existing plants?

Mulch. If there is the potential for a lot of weeds, I have found success by putting cardboard (or newspaper) around the plants and putting mulch on top of that.

An established border between lawn and flower/shrub beds. Using a shovel, half-moon edger, or something like the Black & Decker Edgehog really helps to keep weeds and grass from creeping into an established bed.
