Help me identify yellow flower?

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me identify a flower. The flowers are less than an inch across, yellow and have four petals. The stem is woody and the bushes often grow several feet high. This is a very, very common flower/bush in upstate New York. I don't exactly remember what the leaves look like, but I think they're long and skinny, maybe with teeth? Unfortunately I don't have a photograph. Thanks in advance!

That could be any number of plants. One resource I have found helpful is the on-line site of the CT Botanical Society. Just do a google search and you will find them. They have a wildflower identification area where you click the color flower and many pics come up to help with id. Good luck.

If it os a spring blooming shrub, could it be a Forsythia? Just an off the wall guess.
