surinam cherry cutting help

Hi all,

I've tried several times to get cuttings off my surinam cherry to root (in soil, tropical soil, water, acidic water (twice, once with citric acid and once with a rooting hormone), and in gel and the most I ever get is prolonged life of the cutting but eventual death.

I'm not sure if I am taking cuttings from the right section (I read I should take them from the 2nd stem on a branch, but they do seem rather thin).

Anyone ever had luck getting cuttings to work?
