I'm using 20+/- gal containers with a mix of nursery potting soil and mushroom compost as substrate using a drip system with one .5 gal emitter in each container. I am watering 1.25 hrs at 6 am and 6 pm using a timer. It's worked well for two years. I think you'll like the drip system. I'm in 8a and it's hot and dry so far this year and the drip is working very well. Wouldn't hurt to talk with an irrigation specialist if you have one locally.

I think for my 18 gal container I will use (2) 1/2 gph and run 4 times a day 10 minutes each for starters. I want to make sure the water covers the entire area 15 x 22". One emitter for my 12" buckets that home for chile peppers.

If need be I will have cheap ball valves on hand if I need to reduce flow.

I run mine once a week! 2 or 4 times a day seems like a lot. Do they really need that much water?
