Hi, I'm after advice. I have recently started work on establishing a large vegetable garden on an old farm. The land hadn't been farmed for nearly 20 years- before that it was an organic sheep and horticulture farm. However, despite all the good work that was done way back, the sun and rain seems to have leached most of the humus out of the grass lands I am working on. (Sorry we are based near the Med in the South of France). At the moment I am concentrating on improving the soil structure using a no-dig raised bed approach. However what I am finding, or not finding, are worms. There are a handful, like 1 every square metres (10 square feet). Now I am assuming that this is because of lack of munchy things for the the little chaps to eat. Over the last year or so the quality of the soil has increased massively. So finally here is the question. Should I wait and let the worm community naturally multiply to the level that the soil can sustain, or do I add extra worms? If so how many, say per square metre, and what types of squishy fellows should I be seeking out?

I really need a solution as worms are the magical touch to a no-dig approach, santa's little helpers as it were.
