Actually, there is a technical term, coined by "Worms Eat My Garbage" author, Mary Appelhof; a mass or group of worms is called a "squirm".

That reminds me, I was wondering who coined the phrase "microherd"? I love that term!

I don't know for certain, but I believe the credit for "microherd" should go to Frank Teuton, a man who once frequented some of the worm fora. Prior to his using the phrase I had not seen it in any literature or on any discussion groups, but it is commonly used now. Even if Frank did not invent it, I suspect he is responsible for it's popular use!

Some collective names for worms are bed, clew, bunch, & clat, though I like squirm better! If it hadn't already been hijacked and acquired such a negative connotation, "vermin" (the collective for harmful critters) would be good. A wonderful book is "An Exaltation of Larks," which glories in the amazing inventiveness of our language through an exploration of group names.

Fadoodle, since you've read the book: What is the collective term for people who gather to talk about worms? Mrs. Joe could come up with a couple of suggestions, but I'm not asking her! :)
