Tomato Leaves Splitting

So after a rather heavy rain I noticed today that the leaves on my tomato plants are splitting and falling off. Now I am speaking of LEAVES, not fruit for those of you scratching your heads. They are not brown at the tips so I believe, so far anyways, that they have not had so much water as to drown the plants. They look perfectly healthy otherwise, and I see no sign of pests causing it. Is this a common occurrence? And since I am only speculating that it is excessive water causing it, what else could be the cause? Could this be a way to release water from the soil/plant more rapidly? As split leaves tend to open the leaf up to the air and dry the plant out quicker. I'm wondering if it is a survival mechanism.
