Mine does too. I think it's the worms dashing for darkness as I remove their cover.

I think mine is all the BSF larvae!

They really do make the rice crispy sound when they are happily eating. I sometimes just listen outside the bins (I have a lot of bins) and if I can hear them I do not have to actually check them inside the bin. A real time saver..:D

The rice krispie sound in the worm bin happens for the same reason that it happens in rice krispies, actually; it is the sound of liquid percolating through the material. It is, indeed, a healthy sound, one that we like to hear, and one that we tend NOT to hear when the bin is too wet.

I hate it when those three little elf guys, Snap, Crackle and Pop, show up in my bins, however. Freaks the worms out something fierce, and dirty elves are just plain icky...

I assumed it was the water as well.

To me sign of a healthy worm is how fast they move for cover and how much they wiggle in your hands.

Although I think I have heard the worm moving when the light comes from above.

Maybe I should name my bin Arrakis - the spice ummm..I mean the vermicompost must flow :-)

Yeah, I actually blogged about that a few weeks ago. It's kinda gross, but I like to hear "life" happening in the bins, so I just pretend it's not gross.
