I should add- what would look goo? A mirror, tv(note: already have a tv on the other side of this room) or some other type of wall art? What could I do to brighten it up perhaps?

Yes, the wood part of the wall has an outlet. The previous owner installed it for a plasma TV. However, I have one sitting on the front room part of the living room on a stand because that area allows for larger seating. Below is shelving.

The wood part aligns with the rest of the wall. If that answers the question about how far in it's set. Nothing above the wood.

It is a bit hard to see, but it looks like the section above where the plasma TV used to be is painted black. If that is the case, I would paint the lower portion black and add 2 shelves (also black) to make the entire thing a functional "built-in" bookcase. :)

I like the shelves idea. I think the eye wants some visual weight there.

do a built in with shelves below and possibly a two way mirror concealing the television behind. Frame the mirror with some nice crown?

Thank you everyone for the great feedback. While I don't know anything about installing wood shelving to add on to my current, I really like the idea of a big mirror to cover up that space and will go with that.

I would do a complete built-in and turn it into a wine bar.

The only problem with a mirror is what it will reflect. I like the wine bar idea.
