Is this Purple Loosestrife?

I took over an allotment garden this year and it is over-run with one tough to clear weed. It looks like mint, with a hollow square stem. It does not smell like mint. It has leaves in pairs and has purple flowers at the top.
Is this the dreaded purple loosestrife? What is the best way to get it out of the vegetable garden space?
