Control weeds in a playscape

We have an area that is used as a playscape and it is covered with wood chip mulch. Unfortunately, weeds (mainly crabgrass) have grown through the mulch to the point where it now needs to be mowed. I'm looking for a way to remove the weeds that is obviously safe for children/pets.

I've been reading the various posts on vinegar vs. roundup.

This is not a garden area so I'm not worried about using something that would kill everything. (well maybe in 10 years we might plant grass again). Our vegetable garden is far from the area; well is the front yard; and there are no streams, etc.

Can I use standard household vinegar to reduce the danger or is that ineffective?

In the spring can corn gluten be applied to inhibit the growth of new weeds? Can it be applied right on top of wood chip mulch?

For now I may start with the boiling water. Thanks.
