Advice Needed...I'm Under Attack!

The chipmunks, squirrels and birds are going after my tomatoes and they aren't even ripe!

Yesterday, I had one just turning pink and it was chewed in half. If that's not bad enough, there are bite marks on several green tomatoes and several that have been knocked off the stem!

I will not kill any critter...they're just doing what they do. Is there any other method I can use to deter them?

Thanks for your help. J

I had this problem last summer. I literally got 3 tomatoes, and the squirrels got the rest (from 4 plants). I can't bring myself to kill them either, like you said, just doing what God made them to do. Anyway, here's what I have done: I decided to move the garden further away from trees, (so it's more risky for the squirrels to run to and from it). I have also resorted to putting feeders up in areas that are at least ten feet or so away from the garden...I figure if they can fill up there, they will leave the garden be! Lastly, I don't know if this is true or not, but someone told me that they will just bite into tomatoes to get the juice when it's really dry and hot out, so putting out a bird bath or source of water apparently helps, though this is ohe thing I haven't tried quite yet. So far, with the feeder and new location, I am having much better luck. I have only spotted one squirrel near the plants so far this year, and I have not had any bite marks in the fruit. Hopefully this continues!

I thought the same thing and put out feeders and a bird bath in hopes they would stuff themselves on nuts and seeds. I put the feeders on the parimeter of the property in hopes they would hang out there. Problem is there's a patch of woods nearby and I can't relocate the garden.
What makes me really crazy is my neighbor is not more than 100 yards from me and they leave his tomatoes alone!
Well, I wish you better luck than I'm having. J

I feed several feral cats along with racoons. They all get Kirkland (Costco) brand cat food along with any leftovers in my driveway. My tomato plants are right there in the driveway and so far, so good - noone has developed the taste for my so-far green tomatoes. My neighbor - since moved - had a problem with the racoons getting into their trash - I never had that problem. Anyway, I researched it and found an article that said store bought amonia in the garbage cans would be a deterent.

Try bird netting... even Walmart sells it. I think the openings are 3/4" square.
