thats it your fired,you need to quit wisking and wick and wick harder! if you have a good potting mix it should get pretty close to the top. and for all containers i dont know but you think it would.

Maybe there are air pockets in the soil. Try pushing the soil down a little to get the capillary action going. Also moisten the soil on top a little so it has an easier time of drawing it up next time you bottom water.

I hadn't thought about air pockets.
I'm just using Miracle grow seed starting mix.
It has never worked right for me so I'm forced to water from the top. I've heard the dangers of soil disease is greater, that's why I want to perfect this bottom watering.

gardenscout is right,you have to play around with it, watering top and bottom.
once u get it figured out u will have to add very little water from top.
but dont let top dry out.( or bottom either)
esp. the bottom or u kinda got to start all over again.
