I love those paper lamps! Why would you trash them? If you put a mid century sofa in front of the windows; where will you put your telescope?

Here's what I would do. I would relocate the two green chairs by the mirror. Place your sofa there, Move the little table across the room next to the chair with the dark (black?) base. I would remove all your black framed pics and place the large mirror on the wall, vertically, lined up with the dining table.

For your window treatment, is privacy or light control the issue? Or both? I like these shades for your window: [houzz=]

I hope you can see the lamp in this picture, it's the best pic I could find and I'd like to see that in your space: [houzz=]

One last thing I'd do is place a big bold area rug under the sofa and chair: [houzz=] or [houzz=]

The clean look is great but could use a more welcoming feel. How about some big tub chairs in a circle around a large circular table so others can pull in and have a place to put down a drink and put up their feet? How about a simple curtain rod high above the window with simple sheers and leave the window open. Texture on the walls like cloth hanging

I agree with the comment above mine, and white, sheer curtains would do. Maybe get rid of the rug. Also, maybe move the mirror to the side so it won't be covered.

I agree with Dytecture. You need large doses of color and that can be achieved with paint and wall art. You definitely need a sofa, plus a couple of comfortable chairs. With concrete floors you may want to consider a shag rug to help soften things up and to improve the acoustics.

I'd place the new sofa facing the wall where the mirror is currently located. Then I'd put an entertainment center and the TV on that wall and the chairs slightly out from the wall with the two windows. Place a small table between the 2 chairs.

The only thing wrong with your living room is that you have too many small items in it. Adding a large sofa as suggested above would certainly help. Remove all the small chairs except the upholstered one.

*The rug is the focal point of the room so use that as a starting point. I love the colors. Maybe you would want to paint the window wall orange or one of the other colors from the rug.

*Move the paper lamps away from the window put one along the wall between the living and dining area . The light traveling up the wall would add vertical to that tall wall. The other could just be moved a little left.

*Photos in the dining room would benefit from rearrangement. Cluster them into a more vertical rectangular shape, try not to pair them up. Lay them out on the floor start with one of the large ones and work from there. Go asymetric. They are a little to high now center your rectangle of photos at eye level. A hanging lamp in the dining area would be helpfull to add light to the space.

The wall on the right off the windows, could use a horizontal stripe in a little bit darker shade color then the wall. Paint the stripe the width of the gab between the windows. Organize your frames in a large square, so it's looks like one large art piece. See if you can get some oversized chairs.

This is one of my favorite pictures on Houzz and I think it may give you some inspiration. Your floors are fabulous. Run with that. Walls and sofa in the same tone and then pops of color here and there. Maybe work with the red. What do you think of this coffee table.

Bring back the large rectangular table. If you get a sofa back it up to the table so it faces the windows. Still thinking making the window wall an accent wall by painting in the orange color from your rug. Good luck!

Made some progress on this room this week. ;-) - The idea about putting the mirror at the table, and moving the lights on that wall worked well. I hung my DIY sign above the mirror. Starting thinking about 'large art' and how I could afford it. Went to Kinkos and had them print some vintage photos from Library of Congress 50x36 made a quick frame and wrapped the photos around it. Made both of them for about $25! Still need to find a proper table and sofa.

Yeah, I loved this sign in a room by Jonathan Adler. I am hating my DIY version more and more though and it may get trashed. I never really finished it the way I wanted. Lost interest half way through.

Well, no, don't trash it. Take it to the Ternderloin in SF, I'm sure you'll find a buyer. Just kidding.

I think it's cool, just a bit shocking. You haven't shown us pics of your bathroom, it seems like the perfect place to hang it! I mean, a lot of people have bathroom signs that say "BATH", like no kidding, duh, not everyone can have a sign that says drugs!

Latest update. Thanks everyone for your advice. - I picked up a cow skull which I planted in glass and a vintage metal locker. I've also shown some of the art I've printed and hung. This room is finally coming along. No luck on a sofa just yet. :-(

Like some of the upgrades but preferred your original layout.

Jason, I think you really like going for the shock factor, don't you! The DRUGS sign, the cow skull under glass......you should look for an aligator rug with the head still attached or a chandilier made entirely of jellyfish! Just kidding, it looks good.
