Rjinga I had a friend that had plants come up from a hole we dug for his fish pond four feet deep.

He swore that they could be considered heirloom, I could'nt really argue with him.

Thing is the plants , unless they were really composted could come up with trouble later in the growing season, from disease or patogen in the soil or seed.

I don't mean to dis you at all since this is the tomato forum and it may be that that is the easiest for you to grow the ones you like!!!!!

Well I should have been more specific. what I actually did was dig a whole in the flower bed and then dumped in whatever material I had and then I buried the scraps which included a bunch of tomatoes. So I dont know if that TECHNICALLY is considered a compost pile?

Volunteer plants are quite common, especially in the spring. And sometimes they are quite good plants. Many times they aren't. Problem is, you don't have any way to know what variety they are or if they are hybrids or OP and if they are true breeds. For many, it just isn't worth the time, space, or effort to grow them out.

If none of that is important then transplanting volunteers is a good way to get lots of extra production.
