Beetle ID...

Sorry no pics but I've been obsessed with finding another one as I'm not a big bug fan, but found this beetle beautiful..I live in southeast Massachusetts.

While on poop patrol yesterday (I have dogs!) I went to pick some up but drew my hand away real quick as I thought it was a bumble bee...it had the same body shape. But I noticed it wasn't fuzzy, didn't see any wings, it had yellow on it's black body but it wasn't stripes or spots. More of a yellow squiggle on a black body (I know, not very scientific!) I didn't see any pattern..Then I noticed on it's head it had red, again not stripes (as in a straight line) or spots, no pattern at all..just a red squiggle. To me it was beautiful, like a piece of art almost. Red and yellow squiggles on black. (I have a strange taste in art!) Anyway, it wasn't eating or picking through the poop, just wandering on it and when it noticed me, it disappeared very quickly into the ground under the poop. I was too distracted by it's colors that I didn't notice if it had antenna.

I ran for the camera and gently disturbed the ground where I last saw it but no luck...I've been obsessed ever since! I've checked 200 of the 300 pages of beetles on bug guide.net, and tried to do a google search using the description.

Anyway..this is not a very scientific description, but if anyone can ID it from this or point me to another good beetle site to search..that would be great...I've learned to now carry my camera while on poop patrol!
