Replacing wood doors with vinyl
Comments (29)This might be another idea. We had almost 20year old anderson wood sliding door with vinyl outside on our lake cottage in wisconsin. The vinyl got thin and cracked on bottoms and let snow melt seep in and rotted bottom of 4 of 6 doors. We thought the only thing was to replace all 3 sets of doors. My husband tried a repair which worked wonderfully. We took each offending door off and he dug out the rotten wood from the outside with chisels and a hammer till he got to good wood. He used paint sticks as temporary sides and corners that were covered with saran wrap. Then he filled the hole he created with car bond from the auto supply store. He applied in 1-3 parts depending on thickness and let dry between fills. at the end he sanded the top till smooth. The vinyl coating on the outside is really only a vinyl paint that is not thicker than a couple coats of good quality latex. I primed with oil base primed and finished up by applying 2 coats of good quality exterior latex on the whole door to protect. These doors look like new and the cost was almost nothing when compared to the cost of replacement of doors that were otherwise still in fine shape and seal. Hope this helps. Comments (37)I am a Houzz addict. I collected tons of ideas for my new remodeled kitchen. I waited ten years to bring this kitchen to the new century. Although it was cozy, it needed storage space, granite counters and new floor. Thanks to your ideas I was able to accomplish my goal. My husband kept putting this project off, he thought there was nothing wrong with the kitchen, but when you have to store your frying pans in the oven and glasses in the dishwasher I think that tells you that storage space was very limited. I took the initiative and stained my cabinets and got help from a friend who is a contractor. I now have drawers galore, shelves, trash & recycle bins under the kitchen sink an empty oven and dishwasher :)...See MoreNeed help with my kitchen. Where to place the fridge?
Comments (57)I took some pictures with what changed in the meantime in the kitchen. I am sorry they are not good quality, is what I could do with the light coming through my windows. The carpet is not realy the one in the picture, is similar, it even better than that because it has shades matching the color of the walls and cabinets. Is still wrapped in plastic foil. I am glad I didn't buy yet those other cabinets on the door's wall (see my post from 18th Jan 2014) because one year later Ikea launched another line with not so wide cabinets. Now that I am plannig to work on the living room project I will need some more storage space (mostly for displaying items) for some of my mom's old sets of glasess that I realy love. I am plannig to buy some of those and then solve the "elefant" problem in the kitchen....See MoreWhat's your go-to cleaning tip?
Comments (243)shirley9904 I used sudsy ammonia in the bathrub to soak my mini blinds. Took them outside (standing in a bucket so they didn't drip thru the house) and tossed em up over a clothes line to rinse with a garden hose. Sparkling clean.. even the ones from the kitchen and bath. Those tend to get 'sticky' from the steam and heat from shower and cooking. I've sprayed them after the dry with pledge and wiped them down.. just as you would furniture. Makes them easier to dust off in between the yearly washing of them. I also use pledge on the shower rod. WHEW.. does that make for a fast shower curtain pull!...See Morechipshot
