Wet Basement

For the past several years, my basement leaks during heavy rains - a large puddle will cover as much as a third of the floor. I've tried improving things outdoors, but it hasn't had much effect. I'm tired of water vaccing! The only floor drain is in a closet in a part of the basement that remains dry. Is there anything that can be done, short of paying thousands of dollars to have a trench and sump pump installed? I think I know exactly where the leak comes in, but it's behind a thin wall panel. I am NOT handy, unfortunately.

That's where you see the water. It could be coming in elsewhere and running to that low spot. The only way you can find out is to remove the paneling and inspect.

There's no special skills needed to wield a hammer and crowbars.

Actually, where I end up seeing the most water is in a corner of the basement, where it settles. I FIRST notice it coming in from a higher area, then it flows downstream to the pond, as it were.
