when did you paint?

Hi -- this topic is causing a lot of stress between my husband and me. He wants the painting done now (before trim, railings, doors, hardwood floors, etc). I want it done as late as possible to avoid marks on the walls that may be caused by the other work. My cousin is a professional painter and says the second coat should be done after all the trim is installed. What do you think -- at what point did you have or plan to have the painting done?

Who will be doing the painting?

Is the trim painted or stained?

Our builder bought a painting crew in to paint. They painted after the doors, trim, beams, and cabinets were in. The counter tops, appliances, back splash, and lighting had not been installed yet. There have been several gouges, scrapes, and drywall tape crack issues (because of the winter temps). They know things like this will happen so our builder brings the painters come back for touch ups at the very end.

this was our order with painted trim (some things kind of occurred simultaneously or on-going):

    drywall
    tile
    hardwood floors
    paint crew sprayed primer
    cabinets & trim install
    painting of colors & trim
    granite
    appliances
    lighting
finishing of hardwood floors and stairs
    carpet

then the paint crew came back for any touch up issues

    HTH!

Macy -- the builder has his own crew to do the painting.
Sierraeast -- Our trim will be stained

Thanks for all the other replies, I am a little nervous now about how things are progressing. I just discovered today that they have already begun painting. And as I said previously, none of our trim, doors, floors, etc are in yet.

The builder likely has his own order for doing things, and is not likely to be very agreeable to random changes.

I prefer priming before any finish work, then it can easily be sprayed with minimal protection.

Finishing of hardwood floors is the absolute last thing usually.

Customers seem to notice floor defects first.

I want as little work done after the floors as possible.

All you need is a dropped hammer or stepping on an errant screw to cause damage.

The less masking they have to do the better the job will be and the less time it takes.

It takes way less time to touch up a smudge or a wall ding than to mask the whole darned room to paint the walls last.

We are painting before cabinets and floors. That way everything can be sprayed, so less is masked off, and the better they told me it will turn out. we are going to go with floors absolutely last so nothing gets scratched, dinged or stained. The painters will then come back if any touchup work needs to be done.

Seems backwards to me, but our builder has all painting done after trim and cabinets are in. This is the order he always uses, and his finished houses look good so we're fine with it. Actually now that it's down to it, I'm a little relieved that I have that much more time to finalize paint colors.
